For each available *Consumable*, you can define which metric provides the information on the amount consumed, if the *Thing Definition* uses it. ## Edit Consumption Mapping To define how a *Thing Definition* uses a *Consumable*, you should: 1. Enter the *Insights / Consumable Mappings* page 2. Select the *Thing Definition* you want to configure. 3. Press the *Add Consumable Mapping* button. 4. Select the Consumable. 5. Select the Metric providing the consumed quantity. 6. Press the Save button. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/6759e9c9-3ce3-49df-965a-7231d2d9a10a/Images/Documentation/image(162).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-16T17%3A08%3A00Z&se=2026-10-16T18%3A08%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=wCgj2j1Bg52G6R7dAuoL6dNBR8f6JsK2ubP%2FJKYTQ%2F4%3D) Note that, the metric associated with a consumable must provide the absolute quantities of the consumable between each metric publication. This avoids computing wrong quantities, even if a single data is lost due to transmission problems, device reboot or other unpredictable causes, in this way it is enough to wait for the next value. The DPS application will automatically collect these values and compute the used consumable aggregated by customer during each day. ## Consumption visualization Production cost is a KPI to take under control in order to ensure the outcome of profitability. With the *consumption-widget*, you can report to the users the status of the consumables and shows the aggregate consumption by consumables used by the customer’s products. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/6759e9c9-3ce3-49df-965a-7231d2d9a10a/Images/Documentation/image(163).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-16T17%3A08%3A00Z&se=2026-10-16T18%3A08%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=wCgj2j1Bg52G6R7dAuoL6dNBR8f6JsK2ubP%2FJKYTQ%2F4%3D) In the top right corner of each consumable block, the *Refill* button allows refilling the consumable stock. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/6759e9c9-3ce3-49df-965a-7231d2d9a10a/Images/Documentation/image(164).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-16T17%3A08%3A00Z&se=2026-10-16T18%3A08%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=wCgj2j1Bg52G6R7dAuoL6dNBR8f6JsK2ubP%2FJKYTQ%2F4%3D) When the button is pressed, the refill quantity selection dialog is displayed. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/6759e9c9-3ce3-49df-965a-7231d2d9a10a/Images/Documentation/image(165).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-16T17%3A08%3A00Z&se=2026-10-16T18%3A08%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=wCgj2j1Bg52G6R7dAuoL6dNBR8f6JsK2ubP%2FJKYTQ%2F4%3D) The plus and minus buttons allow changing the quantity to add to the consumable stock. When done, press the *UPDATE* button and the consumable stock will be immediately increased with the desired quantity. The refill function is available and enabled only for users having the W*RITE_CONSUMABLE_STOCK* permission.
